Wood & Brass Sextant

Wood & Brass Sextant

$ 180.00 $ 265.00

This instrument is really a reproduction of an Octant of the mid 18th century. By measuring the height of the stars or the sun, an Octant allows the navigator to determine geographic latitude.

In 1731 John Hadley (England) and Thomas Godfrey (Philadelphia), demonstrated the Octant, independently. The arc of an Octant is 45º or 1/8 of a circle (hence its name) and is divided into 90 parts each half a degree. The Sextant (1757) replaced the wood frame with metal, and over time took the Octant's place, and is still used today.

The Octant we offer is made of wood, like the originals of the time period, with brass fixtures, sighting mirrors, and lenses.

Handmade in Spain.

Height: 12.6 in
Width: 10.8 in
